Vanessa Gallegos Highlights Lotus House Miami and a Community in Need

South Florida is booming. Miami continues to grow, new businesses are opening, development is everywhere, and our region continues to attract people from around the world.
But as our community grows, so does our responsibility to look after the people who call it home.
As a South Florida resident and community advocate, I believe one of the most meaningful things we can do with our platforms is bring attention to people and organizations that need our support. Today, I want to use mine to highlight Lotus House in Miami and an immediate opportunity for our community to help women and children in need.
Lotus House: Helping Women and Children in Miami
Lotus House is more than a shelter.
Located in Miami, Lotus House is the largest women’s homeless shelter in the United States and provides shelter and supportive services to women, youth and children experiencing homelessness.
The organization helps women and families move toward greater stability through services that extend far beyond providing a safe place to sleep.
For a woman trying to rebuild her life, having a safe environment, access to resources and a community willing to support her can make an extraordinary difference.
But organizations doing this work cannot do it alone.
They need us.
Lotus House Needs Our Help
Right now, there is a very practical way South Florida residents and businesses can make a difference.
Lotus House needs everyday essentials, including dishes, glassware, silverware and food.
Think about how basic those things sound.
A plate.
A glass.
A fork.
Food on the table.
Most of us use these items every day without giving them a second thought. But for a woman or family experiencing homelessness or working to rebuild their life, basic necessities can represent dignity, stability and the beginning of a new chapter.

If you have items to contribute, please consider donating them to Lotus House.
Restaurants, hotels, catering companies, event venues and other South Florida businesses may also be in a unique position to help. If your business has usable dishes, glassware or silverware that is being replaced or is no longer needed, consider whether those items could serve a new purpose at Lotus House.
Individuals and families can help too.
Sometimes making a difference doesn’t require writing a huge check.
It can begin with looking around and asking:
What do I already have that someone else needs?
A Call to Miami and South Florida Businesses
Miami is one of the most exciting cities in the country.
We celebrate our restaurants, hotels, luxury developments, nightlife, beaches, art, culture and incredible growth.
But prosperity should also come with compassion.
In a city experiencing so much growth, no woman or child should have to go without life’s basic necessities.
Imagine what could happen if just a handful of Miami restaurants, hotels, hospitality companies or local businesses stepped forward.
One restaurant might have dishes.
One hotel might have glassware.
One catering company might have silverware.
One local business might organize a food drive.
One person might simply share this article with the right person.
That is how community works.
We connect people who can help with people who need help.
Community Advocacy Starts With Paying Attention
For me, community advocacy isn’t about believing one person can solve every problem.
It’s about refusing to ignore a need simply because we cannot solve the entire problem ourselves.
Sometimes advocacy means speaking.
Sometimes it means volunteering.
Sometimes it means donating.
And sometimes it simply means using whatever platform you have to bring attention to something that deserves more attention.

Lotus House is one of those organizations.
The work being done there is happening right here in our community, and the women and children receiving support are our neighbors.

No woman should feel forgotten.
No child should have to go without the basics.
And no organization doing this kind of work should have to wonder whether its community will show up when help is needed.
