Volunteering with the Missionaries of Charity: Faith in Action Through Service
By Vanessa Gallegos
One of the most rewarding experiences I have had in South Florida has been volunteering with the Missionaries of Charity, the religious order founded by Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta.
Known for their dedication to serving “the poorest of the poor,” the Missionaries of Charity live out a mission of compassion, humility, and love. Their work is not about recognition or reward. It is about seeing Christ in every person they serve.
As someone who is passionate about faith, community, and service, I was deeply moved by the sisters’ commitment to caring for those in need. In a world that often focuses on success and achievement, they remind us that true fulfillment is found in serving others.
The Missionaries of Charity provide food, support, and hope to vulnerable individuals and families. Their outreach extends beyond South Florida and reaches communities facing significant hardship, including those in Haiti. Through donations, volunteer efforts, and acts of generosity, lives are transformed every day.
What struck me most was the joy of the sisters. Despite the challenges they encounter, they serve with gratitude, kindness, and unwavering faith. Their example reflects the words of Saint Mother Teresa, who said, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”
Volunteering with the Missionaries of Charity is an opportunity for anyone seeking a meaningful way to give back. Whether you are able to donate your time, contribute food, provide supplies, or support their mission financially, every act of generosity helps further their work.
You do not need special skills or experience to volunteer. You simply need a willing heart and a desire to serve others.
My experience with the Missionaries of Charity was a powerful reminder that some of life’s greatest blessings come through service. While we often volunteer hoping to help others, we frequently leave with far more than we gave.
For those looking to become more involved in their community, I encourage you to learn more about the Missionaries of Charity and the incredible work they are doing throughout South Florida and beyond.
